Afternoon tea was first introduced in England by Anna, the Seventh Duchess of Bedford in 1840. In her household dinner was served at 8 o'clock creating quite a long time between meals. Because she would become hungry around four o'clock in the afternoon, she requested a small but substantial meal including a pot of tea, finger sandwiches and pastries. The following year, the Duchess invited Queen Victoria over to join her for what we now know as afternoon tea.
